A counselor spends time talking with students about their immediate needs, we call this responsive services because we are responding directly to what the concerns are for that day. It can be a fight with a friend, peer pressure, failing a test or something bigger. School counselors offer a range of services from early interventions to crisis response. They meet with parents and school personnel to help students with any difficulty that they may be facing. These needs may require;
· Consultation- counselors consult with parents, teachers, and community agencies to help students and families.
· Individual or Small-Group Counseling- counselors provide small group settings or individual counseling for students who are expressing difficulties dealing with relationships, personal concerns or normal developmental tasks. This type of counseling helps students identify problems, causes and alternatives so that they may take appropriate action in their own lives.
· Crisis Counseling- counselors provide support to students and families during crisis situations. This type of counseling is usually short term. Referrals are made to appropriate community resources.
· Referrals- counselors use referrals to deal with crises such as suicidal ideation, violence, abuse, depression and family difficulties. These referrals may include mental health agencies, employment and training programs, juvenile services and other social and community services.
